We all have a favorite recipe from Grandma. The first thing I thought of when I thought of Friday Favorites, is of sharing one of my own favorite grandma’s recipes. Ironically, the recipe isn’t from my grandma’s kitchen but from the kitchen of Sheridan High School. My grandma spent many years not just cooking for her own family, but cooking for the small school corporation as well. She was a beloved cafeteria lady.

Thinking of this recipe takes me back to grandma’s house. Grandma always used bleach in the laundry, giving the house a fresh and oh so clean smell. The utility room, right off the kitchen contained the washer and dryer and also the deep freeze. The deep freeze was always full, I’m sure it held so many things but I remember it holding my dad’s favorite-persimmon pudding and cookies, always cookies. Grandma’s cookies were the only ones I ever ate out of the freezer and they had this slightly funny frozen taste, but the memory still makes me smile.
My absolute favorite recipe from my paternal grandma is Johnny Marzetti. The ultimate comfort food. I can’t say this recipe is even remotely healthy, it’s full of preservatives and sodium, but for me, it is even more full of love and good memories. Memories made with cousins over the years… matching outfits and matching Christmas stockings. All the cousins on piling on couch for a Christmas picture with Grandma and Grandpa. The boys hiding in closets… Teasing a bull while Grandma and Grandma played canasta! Foods, smells and pictures, can take us sweeping back over the years to the feelings of the moments. Tell me in the comments, what is your favorite dish and what memories does it bring for you.
